Introducing… the New Left Project
Myself and a few others – including but not limited to the authors of the Democrat’s Diary, For Tomorrow and Convenient Lies - have just launched a new leftist political site, New Left Project, to provide a space for non-sectarian, progressive, internationalist political commentary. We’ll be publishing original articles as well as aggregating the best from the leftist blogosphere. We’ve opened with:
- an interview with Noam Chomsky on climate change, nuclear proliferation, Haiti and the financial crisis
- a piece by David Wearing dissecting the myths surrounding the debate on the British economy
- an in-depth interview with US historian and journalist Paul Street on Obama’s first year in office
Finally, I’ve written a piece comparing the discourse surrounding the humanitarian crises in Haiti and Gaza, focusing on the continuities rather than the differences:
“Haiti & Gaza: The Political Economy of Humanitarianism
In Gaza Palestinians are demonised to justify their violent repression and economic strangulation; in Haiti victims are portrayed as savages in order to justify the militarisation of aid at the expense of relief efforts (and, therefore, of untold numbers of Haitian lives)…”

Israeli comedy show critiques IDF in Haiti (a bit weird, but makes its point well):
How exciting!!!! Great job!
Well done! I’ve missed UKWatch – a very useful resource, bringing together interesting commentary from a number of sources in one place. How does NLP differ from UKWatch? Do you think it will last longer/have lessons been learnt from the (doubtless very useful) experience of UKWatch?
cheers.
Ian: it’s different from UK Watch in the sense that a) we have a better website, b) we have more people working on it, c) we won’t be quite so rigidly focused on UK-only issues and d) we have other features, most notably the blog aggregator.
We’ve definitely learned a lot from the UK Watch experience. The thing now is to keep original material coming – we ourselves can’t produce that on a daily basis, of course, but hopefully we’ll increasingly get quality submissions from readers.
IMF Backtracks on Debt Relief for Haiti
Propaganda? What propaganda?
Looks really good, looking forward to following the progress
Jamie, are you still going to blog here or will Healthlander close up shop?
I’ll still be blogging here as well. I’ve got a lot of (non-NLP related) stuff on at the moment, though, so output will probably be sporadic for a while.
Hi webmaster – This is by far the best looking site I’ve seen. It was completely easy to navigate and it was easy to look for the information I needed. Fantastic layout and great content! Every site should have that. Awesome job
