Hatin’ on Mahmoud
The reaction to Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s recent visit to the United States revealed some uncomfortable truths about the servility of the “free press” to the interests of power. His reception consisted primarily of macho chest-thumping and tribal outrage at his “mind of evil” (oh yes, that’s a quote), which found wide expression in the [...]

The JTA reports:
‘A final Israeli-Palestinian peace accord could be a generation away, Ehud Olmert said.
The Israeli prime minister, appearing Monday before the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee, reiterated his stand that a permament settlement with the Palestinians would require Israel quit much of the West Bank.
But Olmert also said he agreed with Israelis who [...]

“Our opponents in the main are Iraqi nationalists, and are most concerned with their own needs – jobs, money, security, hope. And the majority, therefore, I would suggest are not bad people.”
General Sir Richard Dannatt, head of the British Army, speaking about the Iraqi resistance (via) during a recent speech at the Institute for International [...]

I got the “peace process” blues…
The “peace process” industry is in full grind, and fuck is it depressing. It’s the same story everytime – Israel isn’t interested in a just peace, but for political reasons must appear as though it is. As the occupying power, Israel has time on its side. It can afford to wait, to maintain the status [...]

Over a million killed for oil
The memoirs of Alan Greenspan, a well respected American establishment figure who headed the U.S. Federal Reserve for 18 years, are due to be published tomorrow. In them, he writes,
“I am saddened that it is politically inconvenient to acknowledge what everyone knows: the Iraq war is largely about oil”.
Wow – Iraq was about oil? Get [...]

The Bases Are Loaded
Is a U.S. withdrawal on the cards any time soon? Sadly, no. As the excellent film below demonstrates, the facts on the ground point clearly to an American plan for a permanent military presence in Iraq.
Meanwhile, a recent BBC poll of Iraqis (remember them?) shows that a vast majority consider the [...]

Lib’ruls have better brains
From The Guardian:
‘Scientists have found that the brains of people calling themselves liberals are more able to handle conflicting and unexpected information than the brains of their conservative counterparts. The study points to a likely neurological basis for complex personality and behavioural traits…
Liberals showed “higher tolerance of ambiguity and complexity”.’
Sounds about right!

Demonising Iran
Via lenin, take a look at this filthy cartoon recently published in the Columbus Dispatch:
Dehumanising people as cockroaches in order to pave the way for a murderous attack on them – how original.
As one commenter at the Tomb points out, this is not the first time cartoonist (and senior editor for Investor’s Business [...]

Finkelstein Resigns
Norman Finkelstein has resigned from DePaul university as part of a settlement that recognised his “outstanding” record as a teacher and a scholar. Chomsky summed the whole affair up excellently:
“Of course, the whole affair was an utter outrage, a cowardly attack on academic freedom.”
Here’s a video of his farewell speech:
