Check out U.S. Presidential no-hoper Rudy Giuliani’s recent piece in Foreign Affairs. After equating the U.S. with “the international system” and, indeed, “[c]ivilisation itself”, he continues,

The problem there is not the lack of statehood but corrupt and unaccountable governance. The Palestinian people need decent governance first, as a prerequisite for statehood. Too much emphasis has been placed on brokering negotiations between the Israelis and the Palestinians — negotiations that bring up the same issues again and again. It is not in the interest of the United States, at a time when it is being threatened by Islamist terrorists, to assist the creation of another state that will support terrorism. Palestinian statehood will have to be earned through sustained good governance, a clear commitment to fighting terrorism, and a willingness to live in peace with Israel. America’s commitment to Israel’s security is a permanent feature of our foreign policy.” [my emphasis]

This paragraph is offensive on many levels, chief among them in its obvious contempt for the intelligence of the reader. Does Giuliani really think bullshit like this is going to fly with anyone beyond his AIPAC cheerleaders? Suffice to say, if statehood is to be “earned” through “good governance” and a “commitment to fighting terrorism”, the United States of America is in need of immediate dismantling. After laughably accusing “the terrorists” of seeking to destroy “the international system” (other, lesser UN member states might well point the finger elsewhere), Giuliani rounds off his seven-paged manifesto promising increased militarism and, dribbling uncontrollably with war fervour, pledging an attack on Iran to destroy its “nuclear infrastructure” (note: not nuclear weapons infrastructure) – “should all else fail“, of course.

Over to Israel, another Grade A lunatic has just been re-elected head of the right-wing Likud party, and will very possibly become Israel’s next Prime Minister. People, we’re in for dark days ahead.

Gulliani is a moron, he’ll never be elected, so I wouldn’t worry about him too much.

It seems that he’ll say anything to get more lobby dollars just to stay in power.

Lets just hope that Romney isn’t the next one. Or McCain, or Hillary, or Obama or any of them.

  2. I don’t think Romney’s got a shot – in fact, I’m fairly confident that the next President will be a Democrat (at least if they don’t keep screwing up so consistently by giving in to whatever Bush demands). Clinton’s in the lead in the polls at the moment, and I agree with you – she’s way too hawkish for me (particularly on the questions of Israel/Palestine and Iran). Obama, Edwards etc. are hardly perfect (far from it), but I would prefer them to Clinton or a Republican. Out of all the Democrat contenders, Kucinich clearly stands out as the best, but everyone knows he hasn’t got a hope. Which says a lot, really.

I think Kucinich or Gravel would make a decent president, though unfortunately neither of them would win, but we can only hope.

Then there is always Ron Paul, whom I think has a chance. Even if he’s on the right wing side, at least he preaches non-interventionism which can only be helpful.

  4. Ron Paul is right about Iraq, albeit for the wrong reasons, but practically everything else he stands for is either wacky or totally hostile to social justice and progress. Hunter of DailyKos recently wrote an interesting piece along these lines.
