‘The Likud chairman said “all means” should be used to prevent Iran from gaining nuclear weapons, especially economic means, “but if they do not succeed, we’ll have to consider stiffer measures,” he added.’

- Binyamin Netanyahu (leader of Israel’s Likud party, and very possibly the next Prime Minister of Israel).

In related news, an aide to Iranian PM Mahmoud Ahmadinejad recently declared:

“Ahmadinejad is not interested in annihilating the Jews who live in occupied Palestine. What he wants is to change the Zionist regime…

All Muslims want to see the Zionist regime change into a Palestinian one. Why is the United States permitted to call for changing the regime in Iran and our leaders are forbidden from calling for an end to the Zionist regime?”

    Reminds me of Delboy’s son.

  2. Do you seriously believe Ahmadinejad would allows Jews to live in peace, let alone live at all, if he could have his way? Unless they become Muslim, or pay dhimmi tax then they will be in one hell of a pickle. This mad man wants Jews worldwide dead.

Here is a quote of his:

“They have invented a myth that Jews were massacred (Holocaust) and place this above God, religions and the prophets.”

    They are indefensible.

I don’t know what he would do if he were the omnipotent God of the universe, with the power to make all his wildest fantasies come true with a click of his fingers.

What matters for our purposes is that a) he isn’t omnipotent, b) he has no authority over Iranian foreign policy, c) Iran couldn’t attack Israel even if it wanted to, and d) he has not called for the annihilation of the Jews, as many have claimed.

Those who do have real political power in Iran have criticised Ahmadinejad for his rhetoric, and actually hold the mainstream position of supporting the Saudi peace plan. Funny how that’s not reported with even a fraction of the intensity of a few crackpot statements by a populist, powerless president with no authority over foreign policy who is unpopular with the Iranian people at home.

By the way, could you provide a source for that quote? It’s not that I would be at all surprised if he did in fact say it. It’s just that there has been so much disinformation and outright fabrication with regards to this topic that I can’t really believe it unless backed by a reliable source.

    Excellent response, Jamie.

Compare the military-aggression record of Iran to that of Israel and then decide which country is the greatest threat to the region and the world.

  5. Thanks, mirth. Yes, I agree – the comparison would be very instructive.

  6. Thanks for the links (it’s interesting to note, nevertheless, that both articles repeat the “wiped off the map” lie – you can see what I mean about how prevalent falsifications and distortions have become on this topic. In the rush to demonise Iran, facts have regularly been left lying in the dust.)
