The "pullout of Gaza" may demonstrate to you that "Israel wants peace." To me, disengagement without ending the occupation looked more like a plan for further isolation and fragmentation of Palestine.
If you ignore the continued restriction of movement, construction of the wall, destruction of property, arrest of democratically elected politicians without charges or trials, discriminatory laws, illegal settlements, and policies that constitute a military occupation according to the international legal standard definition, then yes, I can see how you would think that the Israeli government "wants peace."

And I also understand your concern about a one state solution, NMS. A one state solution is a very scary prospect for those concerned about the "demographic problem."

Excellent article. Thanks heathlander.

You have got to be kidding me. Hamas is a terrorist group that has engaged in suicide bombings that also wants to impose strict Islamic law. They deserve no benefit of the doubt and cannot be in any way a good thing for the Middle East. That's not to say that I like Fatah either. Fatah is a corrupt party that seeks to and gorge itself at the expense of the Palestinian people. A pox on both their houses.

Another point, Israel does want peace. The pullout of Gaza demonstrated that point. Olmert seems quite willing to give the Palestinians a state with the territories of Gaza and the West Bank. On the Palestinian side, I do not see the same willingness. I do not believe that the Palestinians actually want peace with Israel. They want a one state solution, in other words the end of Israel.

Yes, unsurprisingly, Hamas has not adopted a passivist stance whilst under occupation. You're naive for thinking they would, especially since Palestinian tried non-violence for 20 years and all it got them was a network of settlements.

"If what we want to see is a relatively stable Palestinian democracy with the capacity to engage in meaningful peace negotiations with Israel (and again I emphasise that these are not the objectives of the Israeli government), the policies we should follow are obvious, as they have been for months. The Hamas government should be recognised as the legitimate representative of the Palestinian people, and should be engaged with in the form of meaningful final status negotiations."

Israel doesn't want peace. But Hamas are to be negotiated with because they want peace? Oh yes, the hudna you spoke of. Yes a lasting truce with people who send pregnant mother's of 8, and children on suicide missions. Excuse me as I LAUGH IN YOUR NAIVE FACE.
